Homemade Italian Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 ½ Tbsp. sugar
  • ½ Tbsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. Oil (any kind)
  • 1 package yeast (3 teaspoons)
  • 1 ¼ cups water (lukewarm)

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in water. Let stand for at least 1-2 minutes.

Step 2

Add rest of the ingredients together. Stir yeast/water mixture and add to other ingredients. Mix thoroughly by hand or mixer. Knead bread by hand or in mixer for an additional 2-3 minutes until it forms a nice ball. I use a mixer then hand knead when it forms a ball.

Step 3

Place in a greased bowl and cover to rise for 1 hour. Spray the top with cooking oil when rising.

Step 4

Punch down dough and form into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan, cover and let rise 1 hour. Spray the top with cooking oil when rising.

Step 5

After risen, place bread in oven and bake for 20-25 minutes at 400°. Times may vary depending on the weather. You can tell when the bread is done by tapping lightly on the top. It will make a hollow sound.

Step 6

Let cool completely before slicing.

Optional

When done remove from oven and rub the top with butter. You can also sprinkle with herbs, parmesan cheese etc.
